Pasadena Health Officials Urge Parents to Stop Using ByHeart Infant Formula Amid Botulism Recall

The Pasadena Public Health Department (PPHD) is urging parents and caregivers to immediately discontinue use of ByHeart Whole Nutrition infant formula, following a nationwide recall linked to a multistate outbreak of infant botulism. Local retailers in Pasadena have removed all ByHeart formula products both cans and single-serve “anywhere pack” sticks, from store shelves.

      By News Desk

The recall follows an investigation launched by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the California Department of Public Health’s Infant Botulism Treatment and Prevention Program. As of November 19, 2025, 31 infants have been hospitalized across 15 states, including California. No fatalities have been reported, and there have been no confirmed cases of infant botulism in Pasadena, according to local health authorities.

What Parents Need to Know About Infant Botulism

Infant botulism is a rare but serious illness caused by the growth of spores in an infant’s intestines. These spores release a toxin that blocks nerve signals, leading to muscle weakness. Without treatment, the condition can result in respiratory failure and death. Early signs often include constipation, followed by symptoms such as poor feeding, weak or altered cry, loss of head control, drooping eyelids, and a lack of facial expression.

“Parents should seek immediate medical attention if their baby has consumed ByHeart formula within the last 30 days and shows any signs of botulism, such as difficulty swallowing, poor feeding, or loss of head control,” said Dr. Parveen Kaur, Acting Health Officer for the PPHD. “Constipation is common in infants, but it can also be an early warning sign of botulism.”

What to Do if Your Baby Has Consumed the Recalled Formula

Parents and caregivers who have used ByHeart formula should monitor their infant for signs of botulism for up to 30 days after the last use. If any symptoms develop, seek emergency medical care immediately.

For those with remaining formula, the PPHD advises securely storing the product away from other food and labeling it with a “DO NOT USE” note. If symptoms occur, the formula may need to be tested by health authorities. If no symptoms appear after 30 days, parents should dispose of the formula and clean any utensils or surfaces that came into contact with it using soapy water.

      Immediate Action for Parents

If your baby is exhibiting symptoms of infant botulism, including poor feeding, loss of head control, muscle weakness, or drooping eyelids, call 9-1-1 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.

Although no local cases have been reported in Pasadena, health officials are taking swift action to protect infants from the potential risks associated with ByHeart formula. Parents are encouraged to remain vigilant and consult with healthcare providers if they have concerns about their infant’s health or if they have used the recalled product.
