Following the city’s recent observance of National Preparedness Month in September, Pasadena residents and businesses are encouraged to take part in the upcoming “Great ShakeOut” earthquake drill on Thursday, October 16, 2025.

The annual drill, held internationally on the third Thursday of October, promotes earthquake safety and awareness through a simple, self-led practice: Drop, Cover, and Hold On.
During the drill, participants are reminded to:
- DROP to the ground to prevent being knocked over.
- COVER their head and neck with one arm and hand. If possible, take shelter under a sturdy piece of furniture or beside an interior wall.
- HOLD ON until the shaking stops, staying ready to move with any shifting shelter.
Modifications are also provided for those with mobility challenges, including specific guidance for individuals using canes, walkers, wheelchairs, or those in beds or recliners.
“Earthquakes can occur at any time wherever we work, live, or travel. While we cannot predict earthquakes, we can practice the best way to respond,” said Pasadena Emergency Manager Nallely Procopio. “Use this ShakeOut drill as a reminder to revisit your go-bag or start building one, and register for the Pasadena Local Emergency Alert System (PLEAS). These are small steps towards a safer and more prepared Pasadena.”
The ShakeOut is free and open to the public. Schools, businesses, community groups, and individuals are invited to participate. While registration at www.ShakeOut.org.
