In Sierra Madre, more than 300 people assembled at 10:00 am at 1 Kersting Court for a rapid response action following the shooting and death of Renee Nicole Good by ICE in Minneapolis. The National Day Labor Organizing Network (NDLON) band performed for attendees, providing music throughout the rally.
State Senator Sasha Renée Pérez addressed the crowd, thanking participants for taking action and condemning Donald Trump and ICE for what she described as the inhumane treatment of immigrants and U.S. citizens.
Later that day, Pasadena saw a turnout of more than 1,000 people at noon at the intersection of Garfield Avenue and Colorado Blvd., an especially large crowd given the short notice. Attendees chanted and called out ICE while holding signs and voicing concerns about immigration enforcement.
Representative Judy Chu was seen speaking with members of the crowd. Several attendees expressed frustration to her, alleging that some members of the Pasadena Police Department are cooperating with ICE. Pasadena Police Department officials declined to comment on the arrest and release of José Madera, director of the Pasadena Job Center and an immigrant advocate, which occurred on Wednesday, Jan. 7. Some attendees said similar cooperation has occurred in multiple incidents.
The events were part of a broader national mobilization called by a coalition that includes Indivisible, MoveOn Civic Action, the American Civil Liberties Union, Voto Latino, United We Dream, 50501, the Disappeared in America Campaign of the Not Above the Law coalition, and partner organizations nationwide. Organizers reported that within 24 hours of the call to action, 1,000 events took place across the country.
The rallies marked the start of peaceful protests and vigils honoring lives lost at the hands of ICE, demanding accountability, and highlighting the human cost of current immigration policies. Many attendees held signs reading, “Renee Nicole Good should be alive today,” a message echoed throughout both rallies.
Organizers said the nonviolent, lawful, and community-led actions will continue on Sunday, January 11, in other parts of the nation as the ICE Out For Good Weekend of Action continues.
