Movies That Matter and Caltech Sustainability Programs present Oliver Stone’s Nuclear Now as part of Caltech’s celebration of Earth Week.

This film takes a new and serious look at nuclear power as a way of addressing fossil fuel induced climate change. The screening will be followed by an audience Q&A with Caltech scientists working on energy issues.
As fossil fuels accelerate climate change, the world is confronting more directly the influence of big oil and the tactics that have enriched a few for generations. The film Nuclear Now looks at uranian atoms that lie beneath the Earth’s crust and hold vast energy potential which were unlocked in the mid-20th century, first for bombs and then for electricity. This film postulates that as societies began transitioning to nuclear power, a PR campaign – partly funded by coal and oil interests – spread fear about low-level radiation and blurred the lines between nuclear weapons and nuclear energy, stalling progress.
With unprecedented access to the nuclear industry in France, Russia, and the United States, iconic filmmaker Oliver Stone explores the possibility for the global community to overcome challenges like climate change and reach a brighter future through the power of nuclear energy – an option that may become a vital way to ensure our continued survival sooner that we think.
Movies That Matter is a series created by Caltech in response to the pandemic, when attendance at live performances was suspended by presenters across the country. The series focuses on documentary and dramatic films that address current scientific and civic issues, and includes a Questions and Answer session where the audience can engage in conversation with the individuals involved in making the film or with relevant Caltech experts. Beginning in 2023, the series became a ‘live-only’ presentation.
