At its organizational meeting on Dec. 9, 2024, the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) Board of Education elected its new officers, swore in newly elected and re-elected members, and set the stage for a productive year.

      By News Desk

The Board unanimously appointed Jennifer Hall Lee (District 2) president, Tina Fredericks (District 6) vice president, and Dr. Yarma Velázquez (District 7) clerk for 2025. Board officers serve one calendar year.

The Board also welcomed one newly-elected Board member, Scott Harden (District 4). They were sworn into office during the meeting, with the oath of office administered by Elissa Barrett, JD, the executive director of the Western Justice Center.  The Board thanked outgoing board member Patrick Cahalan, who has represented District 4 since he was elected in 2015.

The Board also swore in six student board members who will provide valuable perspective. New student board members are Yul Hur (Blair High School), Lula Matsura (John Muir High School), Allison Leo (Pasadena High School), Adeline Wick (Blair), Germon Maxey (John Muir), and Violet Beach (PHS).

Board President Hall Lee emphasized the importance of collaborative leadership. “I am honored to serve as President of the Board of Education and look forward to fostering a culture of collaboration and trust. Together, we can ensure that every decision we make prioritizes the success of our students, families, and staff.”

“This meeting exemplifies the ‘power of us’ – the united efforts of our board, educators, families, and community partners to build a bright future for our students,” said Superintendent Elizabeth Blanco, Ed.D., highlighting the Board’s and District’s commitment to advancing student achievement. “In the year ahead, we will continue to focus on academic excellence and innovation to prepare all students for success.”

During the meeting, the Board reaffirmed the district’s  vision, mission, and values.

      Other key actions included:

      • Setting meeting dates and times for 2025
      • Approving the governance calendar
      • Assigning schools to board members
      • Appointing members to board committees
      • Authorizing district signators

“The steps we have taken tonight reflect our commitment to thoughtful governance and a shared vision for student success,” said Board President Hall Lee. “The PUSD community can look forward to a year marked by strong leadership, collaboration, and an unwavering focus on the success of every learner.”
