Heather Povinelli, a second-grade teacher at Bradoaks Elementary Science Academy in the Monrovia Unified School District, has been named one of California’s 2026 Teachers of the Year.

Recognized for her innovative teaching and commitment to inclusion, Dr. Povinelli inspires her students to exceed their own expectations while promoting equity and self-confidence in the classroom.
As someone with dwarfism, Dr. Povinelli uses her lived experience to teach students about diversity, inclusion, and believing in themselves. Her doctoral research highlights strategies used by dwarf teachers that can benefit educators of all backgrounds, helping them more effectively reach every student.
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond announced the award, naming five outstanding educators who serve as ambassadors of the teaching profession throughout the year. “These extraordinary educators represent the very best of our public schools and remind us that great teaching can change lives and strengthen entire school communities,” Thurmond said.
The other 2026 California Teachers of the Year include:
- April Raguindin, first-grade teacher, Bakersfield City School District, nominated as California’s representative for the National Teacher of the Year competition.
- Rene Romero, eleventh- and twelfth-grade International Baccalaureate Language and Literature teacher, Covina Valley Unified School District.
- Chrizia Dela Rosa, ninth-grade mathematics teacher, Piedmont Hills High School, East Side Union High School District.
- Corina Martinez, kindergarten teacher, Pioneer Elementary School, Escondido Union School District.
The California Teachers of the Year program, presented by the California Department of Education and supported by the California Teachers of the Year Foundation, was established in 1972 to honor exceptional educators and inspire the next generation of teachers.
Dr. Povinelli’s recognition highlights not only her dedication to her students but also her leadership in advancing inclusive teaching practices that empower all children to reach their full potential.
