The City of South Pasadena has appointed Matthew Patsel as the new Library Director of the South Pasadena Public Library, bringing more than two decades of public library experience to the role.

Matthew Patsel joins the City with over 23 years of service in public libraries, most recently serving as a Regional Services Manager with Orange County Public Libraries. In that position, he oversaw 10 library branches and supported systemwide operations for a network serving more than 400,000 users. His leadership contributed to expanded programming, increased attendance, and a strengthened role for libraries as essential community hubs.
Throughout his career, Patsel has been recognized for his focus on innovation, collaboration, and community-centered service. His work has emphasized making libraries accessible, welcoming spaces that respond to the evolving needs of the communities they serve.
Patsel holds a Master of Science in Information and Library Studies, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. He brings to South Pasadena both professional expertise and a personal passion for libraries as inclusive, dynamic environments that empower individuals and foster lifelong learning.
City officials expressed enthusiasm about Patsel’s arrival, noting that his experience and vision align with South Pasadena’s commitment to high-quality public services and community engagement.
As he steps into his new role, Matthew Patsel is expected to guide the South Pasadena Public Library forward, building on its strengths while exploring new opportunities to serve residents of all ages.
