After six years leading the South Pasadena Public Library, Director Cathy Billings is preparing for a new chapter, one that keeps her deeply involved in the Library’s future while welcoming new leadership to the helm.

Following the retirement of the Library Services Manager in August, Cathy Billings took the opportunity to evaluate the Library’s staffing structure and how it could best support the goals of the Library’s 2023–2027 Strategic Plan. The result was a reorganization that eliminates the Library Services Manager position and adds an Assistant Director role, a position Billings herself will soon assume.
“I am proud of all the Library has accomplished during the six years I have been the Director,” Billings said. “But after much thought I came to the conclusion that I would enjoy and get more satisfaction out of serving in the Assistant Director role.”
During her tenure, Billings guided staff through several transformative projects, including efforts to modernize technology, address infrastructure needs, and refine the Library’s mission. These initiatives have strengthened operations and enhanced the services and programs available to the South Pasadena community.
Billings sees the transition as both a personal and organizational step forward.
“This change is good for me personally,” she said, “but it also gives me satisfaction that I will be able to contribute to the long-term success and stability of the Library by helping bring a new Director onboard.”
The City of South Pasadena recently announced the launch of its search for a new Library Director, who will lead the long-established institution into its next phase of development. With both a Director and an Assistant Director, a structure the Library has not had since 2019, the organization aims to expand access to information, learning, and cultural enrichment for South Pasadena’s highly engaged and diverse population.
