A Brief History of Lacy Park
Lacy Park, originally known as Wilson Lake, was fed by waters from Mill Canyon, which powered the Old Mill and irrigated nearby vineyards and orchards. By 1924, the lake had dried up and become a “mud hole.” In 1925, the city purchased the land with plans to create a park. Designed by city councilman William Hertrich, the park was envisioned as both a family space and a botanical garden, with many trees donated by the Huntington Estate.
Renamed Lacy Park in the 1940s in honor of Richard Lacy, a longtime mayor, and his wife, the park became a central community gathering spot. Over the years, it has hosted numerous events and remains a key part of the city’s identity. Today, it continues to be a peaceful retreat, celebrated for its beautiful gardens, expansive lawns, and historic trees, and is now commemorating its 100th anniversary.
