This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” highlights the critical importance of safe handling, charging, and recycling of lithium-ion batteries.

      By News Desk

Pasadena Fire Chief Chad Augustin and the Pasadena Fire Department are urging residents to stay vigilant about the fire risks associated with these widely used batteries, which power everything from smartphones to electric vehicles. Improper handling can lead to fires both at home and on the go.

Safety First: Tips for Protecting Your Home and Family

To minimize the risk of battery-related fires, the Pasadena Fire Department offers these important safety tips:

      • Buy with Caution:
When purchasing products that use lithium-ion batteries, look for a stamp from a nationally recognized testing lab on the packaging or product. This ensures the product meets safety standards.
      • Use Manufacturer-Approved Chargers:
Only use the charger and cables provided by the manufacturer, or those specifically approved for your device. Using third-party accessories can lead to overheating or short-circuiting.
      • Avoid Charging on Soft Surfaces:
Never charge batteries on beds, couches, or under pillows, as these surfaces can trap heat and increase the risk of a fire.
      • Proper Disposal:
Never throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash. To safely recycle old or damaged batteries, visit call2recycle.org.
