Tatami, a bold and timely new thriller, opens at Laemmle Theatres on Friday, June 20.

Already generating critical acclaim and sparking intense conversation, Tatami marks a historic first: a cinematic collaboration between Iranian and Israeli filmmakers. Co-directed by Academy Award-winner Guy Nattiv and Cannes Best Actress winner Zar Amir Ebrahimi, the film breaks new ground—both in its story and its authorship.
The plot follows Leila, an Iranian judo champion ordered by her government to fake an injury and withdraw from the world championships to avoid facing an Israeli opponent in the final. Her choice—to comply or to resist—triggers a high-stakes moral and political battle that jeopardizes her career, her coach, and her family.
Featuring a powerful lead performance by Ebrahimi, Tatami has earned widespread praise. Critics have hailed it as “a superb example of pop cultural translation that freshens up the clichés of the sports corruption thriller” and “an engrossing thriller fueled by female rage.”
Tense, urgent, and groundbreaking, Tatami is a rare artistic bridge between two nations often seen in conflict.
Limited run at Laemmle Theatres starting June 20.
