The Pasadena Playhouse is the current residence for Inherit the Wind. This play unfolds as a thought-provoking ode to the eternal clash of ideals, a resounding tribute to the enduring human quest for truth.

      By Jordan Lynn

This compelling production is a courtroom drama that dives into the depths of science versus faith, shedding light on the age-old argument of right and wrong and the impact it has on individuals caught in the crossfire.

The leads, Alfred Molina and John Douglas Thompson deliver performances of remarkable power and finesse. Molina’s portrayal of Henry Drummond and Thompson’s embodiment of Matthew Harrison Brady create a magnetic dynamic that draws the audience into their relentless ideological battle. Each time one of these men speaks, the audience listens with bated breath.

From the moment the curtains rise to the dramatic conclusion, Inherit the Wind keeps you on the edge of your seat, immersing you in the courtroom drama. Set against the backdrop of a small town in a bygone era, the narrative examines the clash of science and faith, where state-level laws and personal beliefs are on trial. Though taking place in a bygone era, this argument still feels relevant today.

This production prompts audiences to reflect on the longstanding debate of science and faith, the boundaries between them, and their intersection in unraveling the miracle of human existence. Man’s right to form an opinion and ability to access knowledge to better assess right from wrong, truth from lies or partial truths.

Under the expert direction of Michael Michetti, the play unfolds seamlessly, with meticulous attention to detail. The set design, costume choices, and well-placed props transport the audience to a simpler era, enhancing the play’s authenticity.

I wholeheartedly recommend Inherit the Wind to anyone from seasoned theatergoers to complete beginners. This production is a testament to the enduring relevance of a historical narrative brought to life by powerful acting, offering a captivating exploration of age-old debates and profound ideas.

Tickets start at just $35, ensuring accessibility to all who wish to witness this courtroom drama. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience Inherit the Wind at the historic Pasadena Playhouse before its run concludes.
