Ninety‑four fifth graders from Monterey Hills Elementary School spent Monday, February 9, 2026, in the presence of Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who spoke to students from across the Pasadena community during a special event at the Pasadena Playhouse.

Justice Sotomayor offered stories from her childhood, describing the experiences that shaped her path to the Supreme Court. She walked students through the basics of the court system and the work attorneys do, weaving in reflections on how she spends her own free time—particularly her passion for writing children’s books and connecting with young readers.
Students listened as she read from her newest book, Just Shine, pausing to share personal anecdotes and lessons passed down from her mother. She emphasized her belief that children are the future and encouraged them to slow down, talk to people, listen carefully, and look for ways to bring light to their communities.
Monterey Hills students had submitted questions ahead of the event, and several were selected to speak with Justice Sotomayor near the end of the program, giving them a rare opportunity to engage directly with a sitting Supreme Court justice.
