The funeral service will take place this Sunday, August 24th, at Pasadena Presbyterian Church. A viewing will be held from 2:30 pm to 3:00 pm, followed by the memorial service at 3:00 p.m. A reception will follow the service at the church.
Bill Thomson, who served as Pasadena’s mayor from 1988 to 1990, was not just a public servant, but a builder of community and a tireless advocate for progress. Under his leadership, Pasadena underwent a dramatic transformation, most notably with the revitalization of Old Pasadena, which is now one of the city’s most vibrant business and arts districts. His efforts also helped position Pasadena as a destination for major global events, including four Super Bowls and the 1994 FIFA World Cup at the iconic Rose Bowl stadium.
Thomson’s service to the city spanned more than 16 years, including his time on the Pasadena City Council and as Vice Mayor. He also contributed to numerous civic boards and initiatives, enriching the local community. Among his most cherished legacies is his work with Pasadena City College and the Pathway Project, an initiative designed to expand educational opportunities for students, which continues to shape the future of Pasadena’s youth.
Though his list of accomplishments is extensive, those who knew him remember Thomson not only for his successes but for his integrity, humility, and unwavering commitment to public service. His vision for Pasadena was rooted in compassion, and his belief in the power of collaboration for the common good left an indelible mark on the city.
“Pasadena is better because of Bill Thomson,” said current Mayor Victor Gordo. “He built our city not just through infrastructure but through relationships, values, and a shared sense of purpose. His legacy lives on in every corner of our community, from the historic streets of Old Pasadena to the classrooms and playing fields of the Rose Bowl.”
Thomson’s passing is a great loss, but his family, his wife, Carol; children; and grandchildren, and countless residents and city leaders will continue to carry forward the work and vision he so passionately championed.
The city of Pasadena will honor Mayor Thomson’s memory by continuing to build the city with the same vision, compassion, and commitment to community that he instilled in its heart, as Mayor Gordo emphasized.
