The National Weather Service has issued urgent warnings for significant fire weather and high winds in Southern California, particularly impacting Los Angeles county.
By News Desk
The combination of strong winds and low humidity poses a high risk for wildfires, downed trees, and power outages.
Wind Forecast
Expect strong, damaging winds starting Tuesday afternoon, with sustained winds of 35 to 55 mph, and gusts reaching 50 to 80 mph. The highest winds will affect the mountains, foothills, and valleys, with isolated gusts potentially reaching 80 to 100 mph in some areas such as the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys. Winds are expected to weaken somewhat by Friday.
Red Flag Warning
A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 10:00 am Tuesday, January 7, 2025 through 6:00 pm Thursday, January 9, 2025 for much of Los Angeles County. This warning indicates dangerous fire conditions due to strong north to northeast winds and very low humidity. Humidity levels will plummet, falling below 20% by Tuesday afternoon and possibly dropping below 10% in some areas later in the week. This will create an environment conducive to rapid fire spread if ignition occurs.
The combination of these factors means that wildfires, if sparked, could spread rapidly, potentially reaching dangerous fire behavior with long-range spotting. There is also a significant risk of downed trees, powerlines, and power outages. Travel conditions will be hazardous, especially for high-profile vehicles.
Fire Weather Watches are in effect for Thursday evening through Friday in areas where winds may remain strong and humidities stay low, continuing the threat through the end of the week.
Safety tips
- Prepare for evacuations: If you live near wildland areas, ensure you’re ready to evacuate quickly if a fire breaks out.
- Avoid outdoor activities that could spark fires, such as using machinery or equipment that could create sparks.
- Stay indoors during the windstorm and stay away from windows. Watch for falling debris and limbs, and drive cautiously if you must travel.
The National Weather Service urges residents to take immediate precautions to protect themselves and their property during this dangerous weather event. Stay informed and follow the latest advisories.
