Heather Povinelli, a second-grade teacher at Bradoaks Elementary Science Academy in the Monrovia Unified School District, has been named one of the 2026 California Teachers of the Year.

      By News Desk

Povinelli, who shares this prestigious honor with Rene Romero from Covina-Valley Unified School District, is being recognized for her exceptional dedication to teaching and her innovative approach to fostering an inclusive, empowering classroom environment.

The California Teachers of the Year awards celebrate educators who exemplify excellence in teaching, inspire students to reach their full potential, and create lasting, positive change in their school communities. This year’s honorees have made a profound impact on their students’ lives and continue to demonstrate unwavering commitment to their students’ success.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond congratulated the awardees for their dedication and leadership. “The outstanding educators chosen this year embody the spirit of innovation, compassion, and resilience in the classroom,” Thurmond said in his announcement. “Their dedication to student success and their ability to inspire all learners are qualities that define the very best of our teaching profession.”

Povinelli, who has dwarfism, stands out for her unique ability to turn her personal experiences into valuable teaching moments. She uses her story to help students understand the importance of embracing differences, creating a classroom culture rooted in equity and self-confidence. Povinelli’s work encourages young learners to recognize their own potential, regardless of the obstacles they may face.

Her commitment to inclusion extends beyond the classroom. In addition to her role as a teacher, Povinelli earned a doctorate and conducted research on how teachers with disabilities, such as dwarfism, can develop effective strategies to connect with their students. Her findings offer new insights into inclusive teaching practices, providing valuable tools for educators of all backgrounds and abilities to better support diverse student needs.

Rene Romero, an International Baccalaureate (IB) Language and Literature teacher at South Hills High School in Covina, also received the Teacher of the Year award. Romero’s approach to education is informed by his own experiences as an English Learner from East Los Angeles, and his dedication to creating a welcoming classroom environment for all students has earned him widespread recognition.

Several other exceptional educators from Los Angeles County were named finalists for the 2026 award:

      • Monika Heidi Duque, a first-grade teacher at Rosewood STEM Magnet, Los Angeles Unified School District
      • Maddie Hutchinson, an English teacher and Link Crew advisor at Mira Costa High School, Manhattan Beach Unified School District

Since its founding in 1972, the California Teachers of the Year program has recognized educators who demonstrate excellence in teaching, leadership among their peers, and a steadfast commitment to student success. The awards aim to elevate the teaching profession and highlight the transformative power of great educators.
