On Sunday, June 9, the City of Roses was celebrated as the city of stars (of the silver screen variety).

The Pasadena Museum of History hosted “Happy Birthday Pasadena: Silver Screen Extravaganza,” a special movie-themed celebration for the city’s 138th birthday. The event kicked off the museum’s new exhibition, “Lights! Camera! Action! Hollywood Magic in Pasadena,” which explores how the city and its people have served as backdrops and trailblazers for the early film industry.
The museum grounds served as the stage for a variety of fun and engaging activities where both adults and kids were fully immersed in movie magic. Silent movies were screened throughout the event, including a 1929 Laurel and Hardy film titled Big Business, which was filmed in Southern California. Many attendees dressed up like stars of yesteryear while they walked the museum’s grounds. Those in costume qualified for a drawing to win free tickets to contemporary movies.
The festivities ran nonstop from noon to 4:00 pm. At 2:00 pm, the crowd joined Mayor Victor M. Gordo, Senator Anthony Portantino, and Councilmembers Gene Masuda and Felicia Williams in singing “Happy Birthday” and partaking in a cake cutting ceremony. After everyone enjoyed pieces of cake, they returned to movie-related activities.
At 138, the City of Roses is still beautiful.
