As the sun sets over Mount Lukens on Valentine’s Day evening, forecasters are warning that a powerful storm system will bring heavy rain, gusty winds and the threat of flooding to our area in the days ahead.

A Flood Watch has been issued from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm Monday, covering most of central and southern Los Angeles County and all of Ventura County, including several recent burn scar areas. Officials say flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible, with rock and mudslides likely near steep terrain. Debris flows may also develop on burn scars.
Flash flooding is a primary concern. Excessive runoff could inundate low-lying and flood-prone locations, including creeks and streams, and may overwhelm poor drainage and urban areas. Low-water crossings could become impassable, and extensive street flooding is possible.
In addition, a Wind Advisory will be in effect from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday across a large portion of southwest California. Southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected, with gusts reaching 45 to 55 mph. The strong winds may blow around unsecured objects, knock down tree limbs and cause isolated power outages. Drivers, especially those operating high-profile vehicles, are urged to use extra caution.
The unsettled weather pattern begins Sunday with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 64 degrees. Showers are likely late Sunday night, mainly after 4:00 am, with light rainfall amounts expected.
Conditions deteriorate on Washington’s Birthday, when showers and possibly thunderstorms are forecast. Some storms could produce heavy rainfall, with one to two inches of new rain possible during the day. Breezy conditions will accompany the rain, with gusts up to 25 mph.
Rain continues Monday night, with additional rainfall between a half and three-quarters of an inch possible. Showers are expected to persist through Tuesday and Tuesday night, with precipitation chances remaining high.
By Wednesday, showers are likely in the morning before skies begin to partially clear. Spotty showers may linger into Thursday, with gradual improvement heading into Friday, when mostly sunny skies and a high near 64 degrees are expected.
Residents in affected areas are encouraged to stay informed of changing weather conditions and take necessary precautions as the storm moves through the region.
