Center ring for “The Centennial Square Boxing Show” will be in front of City Hall (100 N. Garfield) on Friday, August 23, from 7:00-10:00 pm.

      By Christopher Floch

This free show marks the fourth time amateur boxers will raise their dukes under the stars on a balmy summer night. “It’s my favorite event of the year,” exclaimed HS&R boxing specialist Fausto De La Torre.

De La Torre is the heart and soul of the Villa Parke Boxing Program. For over two decades, he has dedicated himself to mentoring and training thousands of Pasadena youth. Every pointer and tip De La Torre delivers is an allegory: an inspiring combination of knowledge and life lessons meant to build the confidence of his pupils.

      Top ranked amateur boxers

The Boxing Program is a wildly popular group at the Villa Parke Community Center. Members of the Boxing Program, as well as other boxing programs throughout Southern California, will be competing at the Centennial Square Boxing Show.  A team from Kansas is even flying in for the event.

Olympic-style boxing amateur competitors ages 8 and over will participate. The scorecard will feature 10 action-packed bouts between the top ranked amateur boxers in the state.

Contact sports such as boxing and football have come under fire as a result of public awareness of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease most common with athletes and individuals who experience frequent brain traumas.  De La Torre encourages the community to witness the safety measures in place with these athletes:

In dealing with youth, our primary goal is the safety of all our participants. Although boxing is a contact sport, all the necessary precautions are taken to ensure the safety of all our participants.

The most popular boxing events of the year is sponsored by The City of Pasadena and the City’s Human Services & Recreation Department.
