Tropical Coral Reefs: Why we should care? What are the problems? What can we do? Led by Dr. Patrick Lyons.
In his talk, Patrick will discuss the biology of corals and why they are so prone to human-induced stressors. He will then discuss why coral reefs are important ecologically and economically, even to Southern Californians living hundreds of miles from the nearest coral reef. Finally, he will discuss what we as citizens and what we as a society together can do to ensure the long-term persistence of coral reefs.
Patrick Lyons grew up along the coast of Massachusetts Bay where he developed a love and interest for marine life at a very early age. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology from the University of Rhode Island and a PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Stony Brook University in New York. Patrick focuses his energy on education by teaching Biology and Marine Biology at Los Angeles Valley College in the San Fernando Valley.
