Preservation Pasadena Part I. Modern Marvels: Mid-Century Modern Architecture 1945 – 1977
On Saturday, March 25th we celebrate the architecture of A. Quincy Jones. Learn more about Quincy Jones during a presentation by author, architect, house restorer, and neighborhood preservationist, Cory Buckner. In 2002 Buckner published a beautiful and comprehensive book on A. Quincy Jones that traces his life and career, including a synopsis of key projects, period photographs, and renderings by Jones himself.
Following the presentation, guests are invited to attend a reception at the A. Quincy Jones-designed property commissioned by Adelaide and Alexander Hixon. Pasadena Heritage guests will arrive by shuttle and have the opportunity to enjoy a reception and tour of this beautiful and unique property. Tickets are extremely limited for this event so reserve early!
On Sunday, March 26th we will celebrate the often seen but misunderstood Googie Architecture! A presentation will be given by author and architectural historian Alan Hess and author / designer Michael Murphy about their most recent book, Googie Modern: Architectural Drawings of Armet Davis Newlove, which highlights the never-before-seen architectural drawings of the trio dubbed the “fathers of Googie.”
Anytime during the weekend you are invited to take a drive-yourself tour of Colorado Boulevard, part of the world famous Route 66, which preserves many of Pasadena’s iconic Midcentury commercial buildings. Specifically designed to catch the eye of the motorists who pass by, there are three buildings preserved in the Googie style: Denny’s, the Astro Hotel, and the Swiss Lodge, as well as several others with interesting and remarkable histories. This tour will be available as a PDF download.
