Shoppers will find like-new books & handcrafted gifts at Library Friends’ holiday sale.

Book lovers and holiday shoppers will want to mark their calendars for the weekend of Dec. 9 to 11. These are the dates of the annual Holiday Gift Book Sale sponsored by the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library Bookstore. In addition to gently used books, unique handcrafted works from local artisans will be sold on Dec. 11, the last day of the three-day sale.

The event will take place in the Library Community Room at 1115 El Centro Street in South Pasadena.

High-quality coffee-table and other books on art, architecture, travel, and other topics will be available and organized by subject. Classics, children’s books, cookbooks, and the latest novels and nonfiction books will also be sold.

“The sale will feature hundreds of books in pristine condition,” said Karen Bell, Friends’ Bookstore co-chair. “We have been setting aside these special books from donations throughout the year,” she said. “On opening night, Dec. 9, a silent auction will feature a special offering,” she said.

All books and artwork are suitable for gift giving. Complimentary giftwrapping will be offered opening night while supplies last.

Books will be sold at a fraction of their list price. Some are as low as a few dollars.
Purchases can be made by cash, check, or credit card.

“All books have been donated to the Friends for resale, with all proceeds going to the library,” said Karen Weinstock, Bookstore co-chair. “Our generous community has donated these fine books,” she added. “We thank them, and we appreciate their support of the library.”

The sale will be open to the public from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday, Dec. 9. On that evening, members of the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library can be admitted an hour early at 5:00 pm. Memberships can be opened at the door.

Sale hours on Saturday, Dec. 10, will be from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm.

On Sunday, Dec. 11, the sale will occur from 1:00 to 4:00 pm and for the first time will include a Gift Marketplace. Local artisans selling their work include Cyndi Bemel (art cards), Leslie Rosario (wrapped pendants), Jeannie Joe (upcycled accessories), David Silverman (ceramics), and Vanora Savig (recycled fabric arts).

Members of the South Pasadena Community Garden organization will be selling such products as indigo-dyed dish towels to support the group’s food-bank activities.

Beginning on Dec. 13, the book sale will continue for the rest of December in the
Friends’ Bookstore. This is located on the second floor of the Library, and is open Tuesday through Saturday weekly.
