Sponsored by Chasity Jennings Nunez, local group JazzZone honors Black History Month with a free public performance at San Gabriel’s Blossom Market Hall, 264 S. Mission Drive, 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm.

The group concentrates on keeping the African-American heritage musical form alive and well, performing jazz standards and utlitizing a roster of lifelong performers.

Their website gives this history: “The JazzZone is continuing the legacy of Jimmie Owens, a legacy of musical genius. James Owens grew up in East St. Louis. James Owens began his career in music during music classes at Lincoln High School with his brother, Hilton Owens, and the young Miles Davis. Both brothers, James & Hilton drove to California, driving Route 66 in the early forties, and became involved in the development of that West Coast Jazz Sound.”
