On Saturday, March 21, 2026, the historic First United Methodist Church of Pasadena will open its Gothic Revival sanctuary for We Are Not the Disaster, a special film event honoring local artists who lived through the devastating Eaton fire.
The program runs from 7:00 to 9:00 pm and features short films created by five filmmakers directly affected by the blaze.
The evening builds on the inaugural Ashes to Films Festival and highlights projects developed through the Ashes to Films grant program, an initiative that brings together artists who have transformed personal loss into stories of resilience, recovery, and community strength.
“Ashes to Films was founded to champion creative recovery,” said founder Shiloh Strong. “While relief efforts often focus on rebuilding physical structures, we believe that reconnecting people with their creative voices is an essential lifeline. These films prove that while a disaster may have happened to these artists, they are not defined by it.”
Featured Films and Filmmakers
The showcase presents five works offering intimate perspectives on rebuilding after the Eaton fire, which destroyed homes, schools, and livelihoods:
Eric A. Dyson, Altadena: The Heart, The Art, and The Soul
Kristen O’Meara: Eaton Alive
David Knott and Jennifer Kim: Disaster Cats
Carter Hudson: Doula
Kerry Ann Reid: Primal Scream of the American Housewife
Each film reflects a deeply personal journey, revealing how creative expression can become a pathway through trauma.
Community Conversation and Reception
Following the screenings, attendees are invited to join a Q&A with Strong and Alyssa Dudek of Ashes to Films. A reception will close the evening, offering guests the opportunity to meet the filmmakers and discuss the role of the arts in disaster recovery.
Tickets for We Are Not the Disaster are available through Eventbrite. Free parking is provided behind the church, accessible from Green Street.
