The Typographer-in-Residence, Yara Khoury Nammour, at the Hoffmitz Milken Center for Typography (HMCT) will talk about the evolution of Arabic typography, tracing its journey from classical calligraphy to modern design systems.

She will share insights from her own practice, discussing editorial design, bilinguality, and her perspective on teaching graphic design and typography.

Yara is a designer, educator, and researcher from Lebanon and an assistant professor of graphic design at the American University of Beirut (AUB). She leads the Arabic Type Research Unit that focuses on practice-based research and co-organizes the biennial Mashq conference at AUB that focuses on advancing Arabic type and its typography.

During her four-week residency, Yara will be exploring the visual imprint of Arabic type through an analysis of its letter frequency. Utilizing custom software, the project will conduct a comprehensive count of all letters and their variations across a large corpus of text. She will also be joining ArtCenter classes as a guest critic.

This event is free and open to the public.
