The Altadena Poets Laureate are inviting the community to explore the myths surrounding fresh starts and new beginnings in a free poetry workshop with acclaimed poet Elline Lipkin.
The event, titled New Year, New Myths, will take place this Saturday at the Bob Lucas Memorial Library, 2659 Lincoln Avenue.
Hosted by Sehba Sarwar and Lester Graves Lennon, the workshop will encourage participants to examine the idea of the “ideal” year and how it often contrasts with reality. Drawing inspiration from fairy tales, myths, and contemporary life, attendees will experiment with writing prompts that blend hope for the future with reflection on the past.
The workshop is open to all ages and backgrounds, with a special invitation extended to those affected by the recent fire. Participants are encouraged to bring a notebook and pen, though paper and writing utensils will also be provided. Those who wish to share their work can do so at the Altadena Poets Laureate open mic on January 24.
Elline Lipkin, PhD, who previously served as Altadena Poet Laureate and editor of the Altadena Poetry Review (2016–2018), will lead the session. Lipkin is the author of three books, including her most recent, Girl in a Forest, and has served as a Research Scholar with UCLA’s Center for the Study of Women. She holds an MFA and PhD in Literature and Creative Writing and was an Altadena resident for thirteen years prior to the Eaton fire.
This workshop offers a unique opportunity to engage with poetry while reflecting on personal and communal experiences, bridging imagination with reality, and welcoming the new year with both hope and creativity.
