Many of our advertisers are local businesses that have been impacted directly by the fire. Some suffered extensive damage, while others were completely destroyed, and all have had to close their doors. Out of respect for our community, we immediately removed all advertisements the day after the fire and transformed our site to provide live updates. We felt it would be inappropriate to run ads while our friends, colleagues, and neighbors were being evacuated and displaced.

As residents of the area, we too have been affected; unlike some, we don’t outsource our operations overseas. Our priority has been to keep you and ourselves informed with timely, reliable updates from credible sources.

Crews are making significant progress in establishing containment lines along the eastern edge of the fire near Santa Anita Canyon.

        • Helicopters flew water dropping missions in areas of steep, rugged terrain near Mount Wilson, inaccessible to firefighters on foot.
        • In anticipation of the forecasted wind event, Large and Very Large Airtankers flew retardant dropping missions along the ridgelines to the west and northwest of the fire.
        • Tonight, engines, dozers, and hand crews are staged in the communities and foothills near the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, ready to respond if needed.
        • Acres burned: 14117
        • Containment: 33%
        • Structures Threatened: 39,428
        • Verified Structures Destroyed 2,722
        • Verified Structures Damaged: 329
        • Firefighter Injuries: 5
        • Civilian Fatalities: 15
        • Total Assigned Personnel: 3,235 (Engines: 316 Hand Crews: 51 Dozers: 21 Water Tenders: 88)
        • Helicopters: 16

        Current Situation

Urban Search and Rescue efforts, infrastructure assessments, hazardous material response, and damage assessment operations are ongoing for the communities on the southern edge of the fire. These operations are unprecedented in size and scale and are critical for mitigating existing hazards, confirming missing persons reports, and obtaining accurate number of structures loss.

        Damage Assessment

Damage estimates from remote sensing technologies indicate over 7,000 structures may have been damaged or destroyed. While this is a preliminary estimate, the number of structures damaged and destroyed listed at the top of this page have been verified by on-the-ground damage inspection teams. Damage inspection teams have completed inspections for 30% of all structures within the fire footprint.

        Weather

The fire area will remain under a Red Flag Warning through early Wednesday. Critical fire weather conditions are expected due to strong northeast and downslope winds combined with very low humidity. The highest risk of these conditions spreading to lower elevations will occur late Monday night through midday Tuesday.

When we’re allowed back, will we have access to utilities?

Communities devastated by these fires will likely not have utilities available, even if your property is not damaged. Due to the widespread damage, it was imperative to deactivate electricity and gas services to avoid further damage.

Once fire agencies release areas for restoration, damage assessment crews inspect areas and remove safety hazards. Vegetation management teams clear debris to support line crews in restoration efforts. As repairs are completed, power is first restored to essential services, and then to as many customers as is safely possible. Dangerous conditions may impact progress.

Customers should be prepared for extended and potentially intermittent outages throughout these extreme conditions. If you see a downed power line or dangling wire, stay 100 feet away from it or anything that is in contact with it and call 911 immediately. For more information about utilities, visit this website for power and this website for gas.

        Is GoFundMe taxable?

It depends. If you raise money through a crowdfunding platform for personal causes, such as to get help with a medical bill or to source money for an educational goal, those funds are generally considered a gift and thus not taxable — as long as the people who donated did not receive anything as an incentive for donating.

        Watch Out

A Hastings Ranch resident reported a troubling incident involving a truck that was seen dumping debris onto their street. Hours later, the same truck returned, offering to remove the debris—for a fee—despite having been the one to dump it initially.

We urge residents to report any similar activities.

After the fires are extinguished, the recovery work begins:

        • Downed power lines need to be checked, de-energized and removed if causing obstructions. Power needs to be restored in areas that survived the fires to prepare for residents to return.
        • Fallen trees need to be cleared to open up roads and access routes for search teams, as well as allowing clear safe routes for residents upon return.
        • Natural gas lines need to be inspected to ensure there are no leaks or fires and addressed accordingly.
Water service needs to be inspected to ensure those who can return will have access.
        • Animals and pets need to be recovered and cared for.
Phone and internet service restoration will allow residents to return and maintain communication.

“Fridges are starting to stink even with crackers and pasta left unrefrigerated. The moisture buildup and leakage from melting vegetables and meats is really taking a toll on the appliance aroma.”

We are not out of the woods yet

This morning at 5:45 am a flare up at the entrance of Eaton Canyon erupted. Neighbors staying in the area alerted authorities.

        • More fire trucks soon arrived and a low-flying helicopter was checking things out.
      • 10:01 am

Last night, firefighters continued active patrol and mop up, mitigating smoke and heat sources.

        • Minimal fire activity was observed overnight, with smoldering and creeping. Individual pockets of unburned fuel continued to present challenges. A mobile retardant base has been set up at Mount Wilson to support air operations.
        • Urban Search and Rescue efforts, infrastructure assessments, hazardous material response, and damage assessment operations continue in the communities along the southern edge of the fire.
        • These operations are unprecedented in size and scale which are critical for mitigating existing hazards, confirming missing persons reports, and obtaining accurate number of structures loss.

        PUSD Schools Remain Closed

PUSD schools will remain closed through January 17, 2025. During this time, PUSD students will have access to self-directed, online learning options. These learning options, by grade span (elementary) and subject area (secondary), are hosted on Canvas and are accessible via Clever.

These learning options support students’ continuity of learning, engagement, and their social-emotional well-being. These are optional for students. They will not be graded, nor will they be required. PUSD’s goal is to help their students redirect their focus from the tragedy our communities are facing, provide them with a sense of routine, and give them the opportunity to engage in skill development during this difficult time.
