Historical buildings in Altadena destroyed (Photo – Jacob)

We have new threads for each day:

This is our coverage of: Monday, Jan. 13.
This is our coverage of: Sunday, Jan. 12.
This is our coverage of: Saturday, Jan. 11.
This is our coverage of: Jan. 6 – Jan. 10.

What you’re reading below is our coverage from:  Jan. 6 to Jan. 10.

As flames from the Eaton Fire roared through neighborhoods, they tore apart not just homes, but entire lives, leaving behind a landscape of heartbreak and loss.

Many of our advertisers are local businesses that have been impacted directly by the fire. Some suffered extensive damage, while others were completely destroyed, and all have had to close their doors. Out of respect for our community, we immediately removed all advertisements the day after the fire and transformed our site to provide live updates. We felt it would be inappropriate to run ads while our friends, colleagues, and neighbors were being evacuated and displaced.

As residents of the area, we too have been affected; unlike some, we don’t outsource our operations overseas. Our priority has been to keep you and ourselves informed with timely, reliable updates from credible sources.

        Disposing Ash

        • Throw away collected ash in regular trash.
        • Store ash in plastic bags or other containers to prevent it from being stirred up.
        • If you think any waste is hazardous (including asbestos), contact your local hazardous waste authorities regarding appropriate disposal.
        • Avoid washing ash into storm drains.
      • 8:35 am

        Cleaning Up Ash

        • Wear protective gear while cleaning up ash. Wear a respirator, gloves, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, shoes and socks, and goggles to avoid skin and eye contact.
        • Avoid stirring or sifting through ash and avoid actions that kick ash particles into air.
        • When vacuuming ash, use a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA)-type vacuum to clean dusty surfaces. Do not use a typical household vacuum or a shop vacuum, which will send the collected dust or ash out into the air.
        • Do not use leaf blowers or do anything else that will put ash into air.
        • Before sweeping ash off surfaces, wet down ash with as little water as you can. Continue to use caution while cleaning the wet ash, as contact with wet ash can cause chemical burns or skin irritation.
          • On surfaces with a lot of ash, mist ash with water to keep dust down, then sweep. Wet mop area after sweeping. Avoid dry sweeping.
          • On areas lightly dusted with ash, use a damp cloth or wet mop.
        • Change your shoes and clothing before you leave the cleanup site to avoid tracking ash offsite, into your car or other places.
      • 8:31 am

        Protect Your Lungs

        • Wear a tight-fitting respirator that filters ash particles from the air you breathe. Wear a respirator that has the words “NIOSH” and either “N95” or “P100” printed on it. These have two straps and are available online, and at many hardware stores and pharmacies.
        • Buy respirators in a size that can be tightened over your mouth and nose with a snug seal to your face. Surgical masks and one-strap dust masks will not protect your lungs. They are not designed to seal tightly to the face.
        • If you have heart or lung disease, talk to your doctor before wearing a respirator or working around ash.
      • 8:28 am

        Public Health Emergency

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services declared a public health emergency to address the health impacts of the wildfires. The declaration provides greater flexibility for Medicare and Medicaid providers and suppliers.

      • 8:22 am

        Preventing Ash Exposure

        • If you get ash on your skin, in your eyes, or in your mouth, wash it off as soon as possible.
People with heart or lung disease such as asthma, older adults, children, and pregnant people should use special caution around ash.
        • Children should not be nearby while you clean up ash, and do not allow children to play in ash. Clean ash off toys before use.
        • Pets should not be nearby while you clean up ash, and clean ash off pets and other animals. Keep pets away from contaminated areas.
        • Wear gloves, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, shoes and socks, and goggles to avoid skin and eye contact. Contact with wet ash can cause chemical burns or skin irritation. Change your shoes and clothing before you leave the cleanup site to avoid tracking ash offsite, into your car, or other places.

        Eaton Fire Day Summary

        Firefighters battling a faire

        Friday, January 10, 2025 (Photo – ANF)

The fire is burning in an area with steep complex terrain and critically dry fuels.

        • Despite these difficulties, minimal fire growth was observed today.
        • Evacuation orders remain in place for the affected cities due to numerous downed trees, downed power lines, gas leaks and power outages.
        • Priorities for tonight include, maintaining current containment lines and ensuring perimeter control. Firefighters continue defensive operations and construct direct and indirect line where feasible.
        • Size: 14117 Acres
        • Contained: 3%

        Altadena:

        Curfew from 6:00 pm – 6:00 am.

        • 100% of Altadena is currently under an evacuation order. For your safety, please do not attempt to access your property or business at this time.
        •  There are currently 43 hard road closures in Altadena, and this number may increase as resources become available.
        • Once the fires are contained and the immediate threat from spot fires and winds subsides, evacuation orders will be lifted in phases. At that time, residents and business owners will be able to return home to assess the damage. We understand the need for insurance photos, but please remember that public safety remains our number one priority.
        • Looting remains a significant concern, with 20 arrests made so far. Only one of the arrestees is from Altadena, meaning thieves from other areas are taking advantage of the situation. We urge you not to return to your property at this time, as doing so will aid law enforcement in looter suppression efforts, which ultimately benefits all of us.

        Arcadia:

An Evacuation Order is still in place for the 268 homes north of Elkins Avenue (Zone 1), but other surrounding areas have been downgraded today (Zones 3 & 5). The following changes in evacuation status have been issued and are detailed in the table below. A detailed map of the evacuation status can be viewed at protect.genasys.com.

        • Residents are urged to exercise caution as they return to their homes and formerly evacuated areas. Emergency workers and equipment are very active in the area and residents must be alert to their work to avoid further incidents.

        Pasadena

        Sierra Madre:

        • Sierra Madre has a curfew from 6:00 pm – 6:00 am in the areas still under Evacuation status.
        • See updated Evacuation Orders and Warnings: Full details here.

        Glendale:

All park facilities will be open tomorrow, January 11, 2025, but the Shoseian Teahouse will remain closed.

        • Note that all outdoor programs are cancelled for January 10 and 11, 2025.
        • All trails & open spaces are closed due to red flag conditions and air quality. Anticipated opening is Wednesday, January 15, 2025, (pending Weather Conditions).

        South Pasadena:

City staff and Athens Services are working together to collect excess green waste in residential areas resulting from the recent windstorm.

        • Efforts will begin Saturday , Jan. 11, and will continue Monday Jan. 13, and throughout next week.
        • Windstorm Green Waste Clean-Up is for palm fronds, branches, and twigs ONLY. No other waste will be accepted in this collection effort.

Just over a week ago, many of us gathered along Colorado Boulevard, celebrating the New Year and marveling at the beauty of the Rose Parade. Today, our communities are facing evacuation orders and warnings, with heartbreaking stories already emerging, and many more to unfold in the days and weeks ahead. Yet, through it all, one word stands above all: Resilience. From the ashes, we will rise. We are one. We are love. And together, we will rebuild.

Good night. See you in the morning.

        So Cal Gas Impact Update

        • SoCalGas continues to actively monitor impacts from the Eaton Fire in Los Angeles County. Over the last two days, SoCalGas crews have been focused on maintaining reliable service for customers not impacted by the fire in this area while protecting public safety.
        • SoCalGas has been coordinating with first responders and continue to assess impacts to its infrastructure as fire officials deem the areas safe and allow SoCalGas crews access to the affected areas.
        • Due to the extent of the damage SoCalGas crews have now observed firsthand, SoCalGas has determined it is necessary to temporarily isolate a section of its natural gas system.
          • We estimate that approximately, 16,000 natural gas customers in the Pasadena, Altadena, and Sierra Madre communities will be impacted by this service disruption, including those whose properties may have not been impacted by the fire.
        • In areas impacted by the Eaton Fire, SoCalGas continues to shut off service to homes destroyed by wildfire.
          • As of 2 PM on Friday January 10th, SoCalGas personnel have safely shut off service to approximately 772 customers.
        • Customers should not try to extinguish burning service lines at destroyed homes.
          • Instead, residents are encouraged to keep their distance and notify SoCalGas at 1-877-238-0092.

Pasadena Updates Evacuation Orders and Warnings

The City of Pasadena downgraded a significant number of its evacuation orders.

Many areas previously under mandatory Evacuation Orders (red color) have been downgraded to Evacuation Warnings (yellow color).

Those in areas denoted Evacuation Warnings (yellow color) can return to their homes, but should be prepared to evacuate if wind conditions or other factors change and an Evacuation Order is once again necessary.

Some areas in Upper Hastings Ranch as well as some areas near the Hahamonga Watershed Park remain under Evacuation Orders (red color). Residents of those areas cannot return to their homes due to ongoing safety concerns. As fire suppression efforts continue, additional changes to evacuation orders will be promptly communicated.

        Pasadena Playhouse

Pasadena Playhouse is heartbroken by the devastation that this week’s fires have inflicted on so many within our community, and we continue to be grateful for the outpouring of concern and support. We are fortunate that our historic building has not sustained any significant damage. However, in our community including our artists, staff, members, and supporters have been impacted by the tragic loss of their homes, widespread evacuations, and the ongoing risks of wildfire and smoke.

Given the extensive impact of the fires on Playhouse staff, artists, and audiences, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the upcoming In Concert productions of Anything Goes and Follies at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

This was not an easy decision to make, but our theatermakers and staff are currently unable to come together to continue the vital work of creating these monumental productions. We remain committed to the safety and support of all the artists, crew, and staff who have been deeply impacted.

If you are a current ticket holder for one or both of these productions, please hang tight and we will be in touch with you soon regarding your ticket options. If you have immediate questions you can email boxoffice@ pasadenaplayhouse.org and we will get back to you as soon as possible. Please be patient with us as our Box Office is currently closed and our team will be working hard to answer all of your questions.

Most importantly, our thoughts are with everyone in our community. Please know that we are thinking of you, and that Pasadena Playhouse is committed to doing all we can to support the people of Pasadena, Altadena, and Los Angeles, who have done so much to support us. A Message From the City of Monterey Park

The City Council and community of Monterey Park extends its heartfelt condolences to all those impacted by the recent wildfires in Los Angeles County. These devastating fires have caused significant loss of property, displacement of families, and posed grave risks to lives.

Our deepest gratitude goes to the courageous first responders across the region, including firefighters and emergency personnel from the Monterey Park Fire and Police Departments, who are providing mutual aid and working tirelessly alongside other agencies to protect lives and property, as well as to our own Monterey Park Public Works Department which has also worked to keep our City running smoothly during the emergency.

On January 6, the Monterey Park Fire Department dispatched firefighting equipment and personnel to Pacific Palisades to be strategically staged and ready for any emergencies. The following day, January 7, MPFD personnel were actively deployed to combat the initial fire outbreak in Pacific Palisades. On January 8, MPFD extended mutual aid to Pasadena, sending additional equipment and personnel to support lifesaving efforts. To ensure the safety of Monterey Park residents, MPFD has increased staffing levels to address any potential issues within the City while remaining prepared to respond swiftly to the needs of both our community and regional partners.

The Monterey Park Police Department received an emergency request for mutual aid from Pasadena Police Department the evening of January 7 and initially sent four officers and a supervisor to assist Pasadena PD with emergency evacuations and looting suppression. Officers helped evacuate dozens of people whose houses were engulfed in flames and worked to save structures both alone and alongside fire fighters. MPPD continued to send officers in 12-hour rotations to assist Pasadena with protection and evacuation assistance. Pasadena PD decreased their mutual aid request this morning and officers returned to Monterey Park. MPPD stands ready to assist our area partners and the Monterey Park community during the coming operational period.

The Monterey Park Public Works Department has worked around the clock since the start of the red flag weather conditions to ensure that the streets remain safe and clear in Monterey Park, that parks and City facilities are safe and secure, and that residents continue to receive uninterrupted services. As of this morning, PW staff have removed 44 downed trees or limbs across the City. Staff will continue to conduct cleanup of parks and streets and inspect damaged trees over the next week to determine which will require removal.

These fires serve as a stark reminder of the importance of emergency preparedness. Monterey Park residents can take proactive steps to protect themselves, their loved ones, and their neighbors by attending Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) classes, which equip participants with essential disaster response skills. For more information on upcoming CERT classes, please visit www.montereypark.ca.gov/CERT.

Additionally, residents are encouraged to review the Monterey Park Disaster Preparedness Guide at www.montereypark.ca.gov/disasterguide, which offers practical tips and checklists for staying safe during emergencies.

To stay informed during emergencies, residents can:

Sign up for emergency alerts via Nixle at https://local.nixle.com/city/ca/monterey-park or by texting your ZIP code to 888777 to receive updates directly to your phone or email.

Follow the City of Monterey Park’s social media channels www.montereypark.ca.gov/Social for official news and instructions.

For those who wish to support relief efforts, donations to trusted organizations make a significant difference in helping affected individuals and families. A Message From Pasadena City Manager Miguel Márquez

Our city is currently in the midst of its worst natural disaster in recorded history. My heart aches for all who lost their homes, their livelihoods, their memories, and their sense of security.

On Tuesday evening, we first learned of a fire in Eaton Canyon. As they always do—and despite the dangers—our first responders rushed to the scene. They found darkness, fire, and 80 mph wind gusts. Air support was not possible in those conditions.

Our first responders did all they could under those brutal conditions to put out the fire, putting their own lives at risk to save others. They battled through the night, with more and more joining the fight as the night wore on. Our police officers went door-to-door, ensuring as many residents as possible were evacuated to safety, including many seniors and those with mobility limitations. Public servants from many different agencies arrived throughout the night and day to keep as many people safe as possible. Together, many, many lives were saved. Their efforts were heroic.

The battle continues, as does our resolve. As Pasadenans, we may get knocked down, but we always pick ourselves up and keep the hope.

Many thanks to our first responders, our City staff, our City Council, our county, state and federal partners, our education partners, our non-profit partners, our business partners, our partners in the media, and most of all our residents. Thanks to all for once again stepping up and doing what needed to be done to keep people as safe as possible in the face of danger.

We will not relent, we will heal, and we will recover! These last few days did not bring us down, they made us Pasadena Strong! Stay vigilant, stay safe!

        Air Quality

Air quality conditions have declined. If you plan to be outdoors during these conditions, we recommend the following:

        • Wear N-95 Respirators: These offer important protection from hazardous air particulates.
        • Limit Outdoor Exposure: Whenever possible, refrain from going outside for the next several days.
        • Monitor Your Health: Remove yourself from the area experiencing smoke and/or seek medical care if you experience symptoms such as coughing, difficulty breathing, or irritation.
        • To maintain safe indoor air quality, implement measures to reduce the infiltration of outdoor pollutants. Do not use your HVAC system if it circulates air from the outdoors. Recirculate air within the building.
        • You may want to wear N-95 masks indoors and to keep doors and windows closed to minimize the introduction of outside air.

From the City of South Pasadena

Air quality in South Pasadena is currently hazardous and very unhealthy.

        Protect yourself from wildfire smoke:

        – Shut windows.

        – Turn off your vents to the outside.

        – Use portable air cleaners/air purifiers inside.

        – Reduce physical activity to reduce inhalation of smoky air.

        – Wear a well-fitting respiratory mask, gloves, long-sleeved shirts, and long pants when cleaning up ash.

Avoid skin contact. If you do get ash on your skin, wash it off immediately. Some wet ash can cause chemical burns.

        – Monitor children and young adults. Do not allow children to play with ash or be in an area where ash-covered materials are being disturbed. Wash ash off toys before children play with them. Clean ash off pets.

Monitor children and young adults as they may be more susceptible to the health and emotional effects of fire recovery.

        – Prepare emergency supplies. Make sure you have an emergency kit, complete with medications, copies of prescriptions and medical supplies.

        – If you experience chest pain, chest tightness or shortness of breath, seek medical care immediately.

        – Once this period of harmful air quality has passed, change your home AC filter.

You can monitor air quality in the Los Angeles area on the South Coast AQMD website.

The State Water Resources Control Board, Pasadena Public Health Department, and Pasadena Water and Power (PWP) advise the Pasadena community in the identified areas to not use tap water for drinking and cooking until further notice.

        • In the impacted areas, do not drink tap water – Bottled water should be used for all drinking (including baby formula and juice), brushing teeth, washing dishes, making ice and food preparation until further notice. This also applies to pets and domestic animals. Additionally, do not try to treat the water yourself. Boiling, freezing, filtering, adding chlorine or other disinfectants, or letting water stand will not make the water safe to drink.  Read more.

        Spectrum Opens WiFi Access Points

Spectrum is part of the communities we serve, with thousands of employees who live and work across Los Angeles. The wildfires have caused extensive damage resulting in service outages, many due to preemptive power shutoffs. To help keep people connected in these impacted communities, Spectrum has opened more than 35,000 out-of-home WiFi access points to be available to all users at no cost. When areas are deemed safe to enter, our crews will begin their efforts to restore service to all customers. As power is restored, if your Spectrum service is still impacted, we will proactively credit your account until your services are active.

WiFi access points are typically found in public parks, marinas, city streets and other public areas and will help ensure available connectivity as the wildfires continue.

        Update from La Canada Flintridge

#CityofLCF continues to closely monitor the Eaton Canyon Fire, which remains an active incident. Firefighters aggressively slow the spread and protect critical infrastructure under extreme conditions. As the wind-driven brush fire continues, multiple structures have been damaged or destroyed (outside of #LCF). Red Flag high wind conditions are expected to continue until Thursday evening. The combination of low humidity, dry fuels, and shifting winds has heightened the potential for spot fires and rapid expansion. Residents are urged to remain alert and follow instructions from local authorities as the situation evolves.
As a precautionary measure, La Cañada Unified School District (LCUSD) will remain closed for the duration of the week.
The City Hall building will remain closed due to the mandatory evacuation; however, services are available online, and staff continue to support the community.
The City’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is activated and will work around the clock to coordinate response efforts and provide the community with necessary resources.
The next major update will be provided in the morning unless conditions significantly change. We encourage residents to stay informed, remain prepared, and follow any official evacuation orders if issued.
For real-time updates, please follow the City of La Cañada Flintridge website and social media, the Los Angeles County Fire Department, and LCUSD official communications.
Thank you for your cooperation and stay safe.

        City of Monrovia Update

        Good evening Monrovians,

Tonight at 6:00 p.m., we attended an Incident Briefing for the Eaton Fire. Since early this afternoon, the fire along the eastern edge was held generally around the Santa Anita Canyon. With favorable weather today, including little-to-no winds throughout the afternoon, the fire slowly backed down into the Santa Anita Canyon drainage area where  crews were positioned to hold the fire’s position. Additionally, a dozer line was placed between the Santa Anita drainage area and Lower Clamshell Trail along the burn scar from the Bobcat Fire. This was done as a contingency in case the fire jumped or moved across the Santa Anita drainage. Air support was also provided this afternoon and is available throughout the night as needed.  Incident Command does not anticipate the fire to grow along the eastern edge tonight, and they expect to continue attacking the fire with significantly more resources early Thursday morning. At this time, there are no changes to previously issued Evacuation Orders or Evacuation Warnings.

For tonight, Monrovians will see the fire on our hillside, including that eerie glow and occasional flames jumping. The fire will also look a lot closer than it is, as the fire is holding in the Santa Anita drainage area. Monrovia Fire & Rescue staff remain in Monrovia but also are assisting in Sierra Madre and Arcadia, doing their part to combat the fire’s movements in our neighboring communities as needed.

Electricity and cell service continue to be spotty as power outages remain widespread throughout the city. Southern California Edison is unable to say when power will be restored so we recommend planning ahead for extended outages.

Certain City facilities remain without power, including City Hall and will remain closed to the public until further notice. Non-emergency city phone lines will also be out of service until electricity is restored. On Thursday, the Community Center will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and has snacks, water and areas to charge your cell phones. Be sure to stop by and say hi.

        Message from Sierra Madre Mayor

The events of the Eaton Canyon Fire mark perhaps the most devastating natural disaster in our town’s 117-year history. Last night we had wind gusts of up to 84 mph followed by one of the worst wildfires in the city’s history. Many of our residents have experienced unimaginable losses. Homes—the hallways where children grew up, the pictures that provoke cherished memories—are gone. My heart goes out to each and every resident who has lost so much. Please know that you are not alone in this, and the entire community grieves with you during this incredibly difficult time.

I would like to take a moment to acknowledge the remarkable response of our community to this crisis. The evacuation efforts were nothing short of heroic. Your swift response to evacuation warnings, which rapidly escalated to mandatory orders, was critical in protecting our town.

Today, I toured our city and witnessed firsthand the devastation caused by this fire. The charred landscapes and smoldering ruins are a stark reminder of nature’s power. But amid the destruction, I also saw hope, courage, and resilience.

I had the privilege of meeting with the incredible men and women of our public safety teams—police officers, firefighters, and first responders—not just from Sierra Madre but also from neighboring cities across the San Gabriel Valley. We have also been blessed with support from Los Angeles County, the state, and the federal government. These brave individuals have risked their lives to protect our community, and their dedication is nothing short of extraordinary.

I also want to acknowledge our public works crews, who have been working tirelessly to repair water leaks, restore power, and keep our water system operational—providing our first responders with the precious resources they need to combat the wildfire. Their behind-the-scenes efforts are a vital part of our community’s response to this disaster.

We are continuing to fight the fire and will do so until the risks have been eliminated. Once the risks have been eliminated, we will conduct a thorough damage assessment and begin the process of healing our community. In the meantime, we have public safety officers at all entrances to the evacuated area preventing anyone from entering.

Until the City lifts the evacuation order, please do not attempt to return. We need to provide our first responders all the resources they need to protect our town and ensure the safety of our residents. If you need a place to stay, the Red Cross has set up an evacuation center at the Pasadena Convention Center, 300 E Green St. Parking is available across the street. If you need a place for your pets, the Humane Society has on-site pet boarding.

As your mayor, I am committed to ensuring that Sierra Madre rises from this tragedy stronger than ever. In the coming days, weeks, and months, we will work together to recover from this fire. We will support one another, just as we always have.

To those who have lost their homes, please know that we are mobilizing resources to assist you. To those who have stepped up to help, whether by offering shelter, supplies, or simply a kind word, thank you. Your generosity reflects the very best of who we are as a community.

Sierra Madre has faced challenges before, and we have always emerged stronger because of the resilience and compassion of our residents. This time will be no different. Together, we will heal and honor the spirit of our town.

For updates and critical safety messages, please continue follow the City’s official social media posts on Facebook and Instagram, and sign up for our Nixle alerts.

With deepest sympathy and unwavering resolve,

Robert Parkhurst, Mayor of Sierra Madre

        PWP Water Alert Clarification

Debris and elevated turbidity from the Eaton Fire potentially impacted PWP’s drinking water system in the Eaton Fire evacuated areas:

The State Water Resources Control Board, Pasadena Public Health Department, and Pasadena Water and Power Water System are advising Pasadena residents to NOT USE THE TAP WATER FOR DRINKING AND COOKING IN THE IMPACTED AREAS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. DO NOT DRINK YOUR TAP WATER AND USE ONLY BOTTLED WATER. DO NOT TRY AND TREAT THE WATER YOURSELF. We will inform you when tests show that the water is safe again. Expected timeframe for resolution is unknown and dependent on evolving fire, wind, and related conditions.”

        Pasadena Humane Update

        Update on Eaton Fire Emergency:
We have taken in over 300 animals due to evacuations and have staff and volunteers working nonstop to help with their care. We are starting to see many animals coming in with burns and injuries. These animals are being treated in our ICU. We are providing them with pain medications, wound care, fluid, and oxygen as needed.
We’re working with shelters across the state who have offered to take in the animals that were already in our care so that we can focus on providing resources to the displaced animals. A huge thank you to the shelters throughout California who are offering assistance, as well as all people in our community reaching out to volunteer or donate. Our biggest need right now is for monetary donations to help provide emergency resources to animals affected by the wildfires.
If you are being evacuated and can go somewhere with your pets–such as a friend or family member’s home–that is ideal. If you are evacuating, please take your animals with you. We are very thankful that the Pasadena Civic Center has allowed people to stay with their pets. We are helping in any way that we can–providing them with resources such as food and leashes for the displaced families. We also have pet food available at the shelter for those who need it. If you cannot go somewhere that allows your pet to stay with you, you can bring your animals to the shelter where we are offering emergency boarding.

        – This dog was found outside near the site of the fires. He is covered in burns and very dehydrated. His paw pads are singed and he is coated in ash. Despite being understandably shaken from his experience, he is incredible sweet. He is currently being treated by our Veterinary team in our ICU, where we are providing him with wound care, pain medications, and fluids.
        – The cat also came to us covered in burns. He was treated immediately in our ICU and is now resting in an oxygen kennel. Luckily, he is currently stable.
        – The bird came in with burns on its tail area. It is being treated in our Wildlife Center. If you find injured wildlife, please text our wildlife helpline at 626.344.1129.

        Helpful Tips

Residents can take the following steps to stay prepared:

        • Assemble an Emergency Kit:
Include flashlights, batteries, non-perishable food, water, a manual can opener, and a battery-powered radio.
        • Charge Devices in Advance:
Ensure cell phones and backup power banks are fully charged before the winds begin.
        • Check on Neighbors:
Elderly neighbors, residents with disabilities, and those with mobility or special needs may require additional help during power outages. Make sure they have what they need and are safe.
        • Have a Backup Plan for Medical Equipment:
        • If you or someone in your household relies on powered medical devices, make arrangements for alternative power sources.
        • Secure Outdoor Items:
High winds can turn unsecured objects into dangerous projectiles. Bring in or secure outdoor furniture, decorations, and trash bins.

        From Rep. Judy Chu:

My heart is heavy this morning seeing the devastation across Southern California, and my thoughts are with the families whose homes, businesses, and schools have been destroyed or are in the path of the wildfires ravaging our region. Right now, my top priority is assisting people in my district impacted by the Eaton Fire to safety and supporting our heroic first responders who are working around the clock. I’m imploring everyone in the wildfires’ paths to listen to local emergency officials, prepare to evacuate, and follow evacuation orders when given. For residents seeking safe shelter, the Pasadena Convention Center and Arcadia Community Center are open for refuge.

I’m remaining in close contact with federal, state, and local officials, and I appreciate the Biden-Harris Administration’s swift approval of a Fire Management Assistance Grant to reimburse California for immediate firefighting costs. My office stands ready to assist in any and all response and recovery efforts today and into the future. I urge my constituents to reach out to my office when it is safe to do so for assistance accessing support and resources in this time of immense need.”

Avoid being outside during periods of peak wind gusts, especially near trees, power lines, and other structures that could be vulnerable to the wind. Never touch or approach downed power lines.
        4. Prepare for Potential Power Outages:
High winds can cause power outages. Be sure to have flashlights, batteries, and other emergency supplies on hand. Charge cell phones and other essential electronics in advance. Consider having a battery-powered radio to stay informed in case of power loss.
        5. Avoid Driving During High Winds:
If possible, avoid driving during periods of intense wind gusts. High winds can make driving hazardous, especially for high-profile vehicles, and may cause debris or fallen trees to block roads.
        6. Prepare Emergency Kits:
Ensure you have an emergency kit with enough food, water, medications, and other essentials to last for 72 hours in case of a prolonged outage or disruption. Visit gov/Kit for more information.
        7. Report Suspicious Activity:
If you notice suspicious behavior or signs of arson, report it immediately to local authorities. Local Fire Departments encourage residents to be vigilant in preventing fire hazards during this period of heightened risk.
        8. Be Prepared for Red Flag Conditions:
Depending on where you live, stay alert to social media posts and posted signs in your neighborhoods.
        9. Monitor Weather Alerts:
Stay informed through local news, weather services, and official communication channels for any updates, warnings, or advisories related to the storm.
        10. Update evacuation plans:
Now’s the time to review your evacuation plans and make sure emergency kits are stocked with everything you need should you have to evacuate. Visit ReadyforWildfire.org for more information on preparing for and preventing wildfires.

All PUSD Schools are Closed Jan. 9

        From PUSD:

With the volatility of the high-wind event affecting our area, increasing reports of wind damage, and a fire near Eaton Canyon, in an abundance of caution, we have made the decision to close all schools tomorrow, Wednesday, January 8, 2025. Additionally, the City of Pasadena is assessing whether to declare a state of emergency due to the impacts of the weather.

The closure will allow our crews time to evaluate and repair damages to ensure all campuses are safe for students and staff. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed.

        Meals:

Because many of our students depend on school meals, Grab & Go meals will be available for pick up at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. at Madison Elementary (515 E Ashtabula St, Pasadena, CA 91104), McKinley School (325 S Oak Knoll Ave, Pasadena, CA 91101), and Willard (301 Madre St, Pasadena, CA 91107).
