A small fire broke out early Sunday morning, April 27, in the newspaper bin area near the parking lot entrance of Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena, leaving behind scorched wood, blackened paper, and unanswered questions.

The fire, which began in the quiet predawn hours, caused no injuries but significantly damaged the wooden newspaper bins—familiar fixtures at the store for years. Thanks to Vroman’s sprinkler system, the flames were quickly suppressed before they could spread to the main building or nearby structures.
The cause of the fire remains unknown. Employees noted that the affected area does not have surveillance coverage, which may slow the investigation.
Despite the setback, staff have affirmed Vroman’s commitment to rebuilding the bin area, emphasizing its role as both a vital community gathering space for readers and a key outlet for local news publications.
In the meantime, readers can still pick up the Colorado Boulevard print edition and other local publications at various alternative locations, including our own stands at Landmark Theatres Pasadena (lobby), Pasadena City Hall, Mama M Sushi at the Shops on Holly, the Pasadena Visitors Center (Convention Center), Loli Farms, and several other spots throughout Pasadena and the surrounding area.
No official timeline has been announced for the reconstruction of the courtyard’s newspaper area, but for many, the loss of the bins feels like more than just burned wood—it’s a temporary pause in a local tradition.
