The Playhouse Village Association and Mercadito Monarca continue the cultural tradition of celebrating Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with a free full day event on Sunday, October 24, 2021, from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

      By News Desk

Dia de los Muertos Celebration in Playhouse Village brings together visual and performing artists, educators, and the local community to honor and celebrate those who have passed away. This vibrant, entertaining, and cultural experience will take place at outdoor venues:

      • Arcade Lane
        696 E Colorado Blvd.
        – See Arcade Lane transform into a beautiful Mexican Zócalo featuring live performances of dance, music, and poetry to commemorate the lives of those who are no longer with us. Join a procession led by Danza Azteca Yankuititl showcasing Aztec dances and traditional costumes. Ballet Folklorico group Danza Artes de Mexico takes you through a journey across Mexico with a mix of each state’s own traditional style, colorful repertoire, and amazing tap steps. Local poets from Flor y Canto present their original work of poetry and spoken word.
        – Headlining the day is the popular entertainment group La Junta Los Angeles.
        – Enjoy face painting, arts & crafts activities, story time, and shopping amongst artisan craft vendors.
        – Watch chalk artists create masterpiece murals or play a round of everyone’s favorite Latinx game Loteria, hosted by Mr. Pasadena.
      • Boston Court Pasadena
70 N Mentor Ave in Pasadena
        – Live performances will take place in the parking lot from Manny Giella and his band, and youth slam poets from Get Lit.
        – Boston Court’s ofrenda, created by a local artist Denise Esparza and dedicated to loved ones lost by our community to COVID-19 in this past year and a half, will also be on view in the lobby throughout the afternoon. Guests are invited to participate in this community altar by submitting photos and written tributes to loved ones.
Guests two years and older must wear face masks when entering the festival spaces during all times of the outdoor event, regardless of vaccination status.

      Altars

This year, Playhouse Village Association and Mercadito Monarca have curated a collection of ofrendas, or altars, located throughout Playhouse Village and created by local artists and community partners. Experience and learn about the traditions of Día de los Muertos through this self-guided tour. Objects important to lost loved ones, such as favorite foods, mementos, and pictures, are collected and incorporated into these elaborate displays that include sugar skulls, candles, flowers, papel picado (paper cutouts) and other decorations. The altars exhibit will be on display in Arcade Lane and throughout Playhouse Village at various locations October 24 – November 3.
