A section of La Cañada High School was evacuated Friday afternoon after staff and students reported a strong chemical odor coming from a third-floor area of one of the campus buildings.

Los Angeles County Fire Department crews arrived just after noon to assess what officials described as a hazardous materials incident. Responders focused their initial evaluation on the third floor, where the smell was first detected, and ordered an evacuation of the affected building while the rest of the campus was instructed to shelter in place.
Two individuals were assessed for possible inhalation exposure, fire officials said, though the extent of their symptoms was not immediately clear. No other injuries were reported.
Aerial footage around 1:30 pm showed students and staff moving to the school’s baseball fields as firefighters and hazmat teams worked to identify the source of the odor. Officials later confirmed that crews found evidence of a chemical spill, though the exact substance and cause remain under investigation.
The situation was contained by early afternoon, and no widespread exposures were reported. Authorities have not yet released additional details about the spill or when the affected building will reopen.
