Barger said the individuals were targeting wildfire-impacted communities during a vulnerable time, taking advantage of survivors attempting to rebuild their homes and lives. She emphasized that county officials will not allow exploitation of fire victims.
“We will not stand by while Eaton Fire survivors get taken advantage of as they try to rebuild,” Barger said, noting her support for the District Attorney’s action. She added that standing beside Hochman as the charges were announced underscored the county’s commitment to accountability.
Hochman also cautioned residents about the risks of hiring contractors who lack proper licensing, saying the danger of being scammed rises significantly when survivors are desperate to begin repairs. “You’re going to give them a whole lot of money upfront, and you may not see them again,” he said.
Barger reaffirmed her dedication to ensuring that reconstruction efforts in Altadena are conducted responsibly. “I remain committed to rebuilding Altadena responsibly in a way that prioritizes survivors’ peace of mind,” she said.
The charges mark a significant step by the District Attorney’s Office in protecting wildfire survivors and enforcing licensing laws meant to safeguard consumers during the rebuilding process.
