The California Residential Mitigation Program (CRMP) has announced an extension for the registration period of its Earthquake Brace + Bolt (EBB) grant program, which will now close on October 17, 2025, two weeks later than the original October 1 deadline. This extension coincides with the California Great ShakeOut drill on October 16, a day when millions of Californians will be focusing on earthquake preparedness.

The EBB program, which opened for registration on August 20, offers crucial funding for seismic retrofits. These retrofits, such as bolting homes to their foundations and bracing crawl space walls, are proven techniques that can significantly reduce the risk of earthquake damage. With eligibility extending to more than 1,100 ZIP codes statewide, including 303 added earlier this year, the extension gives even more homeowners and landlords the chance to apply for up to $3,000 in grant funding.
For the first time, the EBB program has expanded eligibility to non-owner-occupied homes, meaning landlords can now apply for retrofitting grants for their investment properties. This change broadens access to the program, allowing more people to protect their homes and communities.
“The extension helps meet the high demand for earthquake retrofit assistance while drawing attention to the importance of preparedness as millions of Californians take part in the Great ShakeOut,” said Janiele Maffei, Chief Mitigation Officer of the California Earthquake Authority (CEA). “This extra time gives homeowners and rental property owners another chance to apply, choose a contractor, and begin strengthening their homes. Each retrofit improves safety not just for families but for entire communities.”
Over $20 million in funding is available during this registration period to help offset retrofit costs. Since its launch in 2013, the EBB program has provided financial assistance to over 33,500 California homeowners.
In addition to the standard grants of up to $3,000, income-eligible households may qualify for supplemental grants of up to $7,000, potentially covering 100% of retrofit costs.
“Every retrofit makes California stronger and more resilient,” said Tom Welsh, CEO of the California Earthquake Authority. “By aligning with the Great ShakeOut, this extension ensures that more families are reminded of the simple but powerful steps they can take to protect their homes before the next big quake.”
The EBB program is administered by CRMP, a partnership between the California Earthquake Authority and the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES). Property owners interested in applying for funding can visit EarthquakeBraceBolt.com.
