Blossom Market Hall’s Black History Month Exhibit Highlights Local Artists in San Gabriel City

For the third year, local resident Dr. Chasity Jennings-Nuñez sponsored an art installation in the second-floor gallery space at Blossom Market Hall.

      By News Desk

Art@Blossom Market Hall features rotating exhibits showcasing local artists, with a focus on bringing art to the public. Community Manager Linda La and Blossom Market owners Chris and Nellie Tran are committed to offering “diverse food vendors, mostly chef-driven and mom-and-pop,” while creating a platform for local chefs to showcase their talents and build a community centered around food. This commitment to diversity extends to the art gallery, with the February exhibit serving as the most visible celebration of Black History Month in the city, open to patrons of the popular food hall.

This year’s exhibit featured two talented artists selected by Jennings-Nuñez: Stan Bruce and Taylor Herron. Bruce, a Vietnam War combat veteran and former National Marketing Manager for USPS, is a resident of the San Gabriel Valley and owns Spirit Life Art Studios in Pasadena. Herron, who recently moved from Mississippi to Los Angeles, was highly sought after after high school, with nearly $3 million in scholarship offers from art programs nationwide. She is now a sophomore at Otis College of Art and Design.

With the participation of two artists, this year’s exhibit and reception grew in scope, receiving support from the San Gabriel Valley YWCA. Elon Darthard, the YWCA’s Community Engagement Coordinator, was eager to partner for this month-long exhibit, as it aligns with their Health Equity grant goals. Debra Ward, the YWCA’s CEO, attended the reception on Friday, joined by Darthard and other staff members.

The reception, which featured catering by Caribbean Gourmet—San Gabriel City’s only Black-owned restaurant—along with raffle prizes from Black-owned businesses both national and local, brought together San Gabriel Valley community members, Otis College students and faculty, and friends and family of the artists and Jennings-Nuñez.

The exhibit is open to the public until February 28.
