In a continued push to protect vulnerable residents, the San Gabriel City Council on Oct. 7 recognized Domestic Violence Awareness Month and welcomed a new police initiative aimed at emergency preparedness.

The San Gabriel City Council has proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, emphasizing its commitment to public safety and the well-being of all residents. During its meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 7, the council also received a presentation from the San Gabriel Police Department introducing the new Special Alert Sticker Program. This program is designed to help ensure that people who require special assistance during emergencies receive faster service. While available to all residents, the program is particularly intended to support vulnerable individuals who may need extra assistance during emergencies.

“We are committed to community engagement, and we want our community to feel safe with us,” said Police Officer Cecily Ramirez. “It’s going to provide safer interactions with our vulnerable individuals, faster and more informed responses during emergencies, and reduce the potential for misunderstandings or conflicts.”

The Police Department will share application details on social media and release all information in multiple languages.

“We can share that information with our public, whether through social media platforms, our city magazine, or other entities,” Ramirez said. ” I work specifically with our schools. We will provide flyers to our school district.”

“Great program! I love it,” Jorge Herrera Avila said. “It’s just another way to ensure that our residents are safe and we are too, because we never know what’s going to happen, especially when you’re out in the community. So, kudos to your team for doing this.”

The council also presented Florence Lin with a retirement certification as she retired from Asian Youth Service after 20 years of dedicated service to the city. Members praised her accomplishments throughout her tenure.

“The Mayor and the City Council of San Gabriel wish to recognize your outstanding career and numerous achievements—2017 Chinese American Elected Officers Citizen of the Year, 2022 San Gabriel Outstanding Older American (the first API to receive that award), and the 2023 PBS SoCal/KCET Local Heroes honoree,” said Mayor Denise Menchaca. “The city and the community as a whole thank you for your service and wish you all the best.”

The next San Gabriel City Council meeting will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2025.
