As the days grow longer and temperatures rise, Sierra Madre residents can expect increased bear activity in the area.

In a proactive effort to promote safety and coexistence, city officials are encouraging the community to follow important bear safety guidelines to help protect both people and wildlife.
“Spring and summer bring more bear activity in Sierra Madre—let’s work together to keep our community safe and our wildlife wild!” the city’s message reads.
Bear Safety Tips for Residents
- Secure trash and food:
Use bear-resistant bins or store waste indoors until collection day. - Lock doors and windows:
This includes garages and sheds, especially at night. - Keep yards clean:
Remove fallen fruit, clean grills regularly, and avoid composting food scraps. - If you see a bear:
Stay calm, do not run. Make yourself appear larger, speak firmly, and slowly back away.
Wildlife Reporting
To report wildlife activity in Sierra Madre, call 9-1-1 immediately if a bear is inside a structure or someone feels threatened. For non-emergency sightings or repeated visits, contact (626) 355-1414. Reports can also be submitted online at wildlife.ca.gov/wir or by emailing wildlife@sierramadreca.gov.
Feeding wildlife remains strictly prohibited in Sierra Madre, as human interaction can endanger both residents and bears.
