Last month, the Welcome Group Inc. of El Segundo secured funding to start construction on a new Marriott hotel in Pasadena.

The $37,000,000 loan ensures the building of a glass, stone, and faux wood structure of 110,000 square feet.
Located next to the Urth Cafe, they have begun work at 550-566 Colorado Blvd. on the space that was formerly a parking lot.
This new five-story building will have 194 rooms and 5000 square feet of commercial space, including a rooftop bar. There is no indication of how much of that commercial space has been earmarked as filled, considering the surfeit of same in Pasadena. Apparently, the structure will retain a “small” parking lot in the rear. While there is an adjacent parking structure and public parking across the street (behind the Pasadena Playhouse and Urth Café), the question remains as to how the City will handle the loss of much-needed parking space.

Just what Pasadena needs most – another expensive hotel.
