Altadena’s trash pick-up service will be transitioning from Athens Services to Universal Waste Management (UWS), effective Sept. 1, 2022.  Residents will receive information outlining the changes by next week.

      By News Desk

The current rate for basic services with Athens Services is $32.60 per month. UWS will be charging $32.58 per month starting October 1, 2022, which is $.02 lower than the current rate.

UWS will be using smaller trucks when necessary and will coordinate with Athens Services to identify locations suitable for smaller trucks.

Bear-proof carts have been available through Athens Services. Residents who already have these carts will continue using them, and those who don’t may contact UWS to request one to be delivered to them. Please note that these bear-proof carts, although available to everyone, will be for an additional charge for residents who are outside the County’s designated bear zone.

Universal Waste Management offers Informational Meetings

Universal Waste Management will hold two virtual informational meetings to discuss services under the new contract:

The Altadena Town Council is trying to schedule an in-person Town Hall for September as well.

The Changes: Athens provided 1 Trash bin, 2 Green bins, and 2 Recycle. The New Company only gives 1 Trash, 1 Green and 1 Recycle which are smaller than the previous company’s bins, for the same price I believe. However, We can pay EXTRA for another Green or Recycle bin. We have also not been billed yet, and they tell me they have NO IDEA When they will get around to billing us, as they are so overwhelmed.
So when I spoke to the company to come and get the second Green and Recycle Bins, they came on Trash day and took the time and DUMPED the FULL Recycle Bin into the my emptied trash so they could take their extra Recycle bin. UNBELIEVABLE!
Quite Honestly I’m wondering who got the “Kick Back” for changing to this incompetent company.

They took away all the Athens Trash, Recycle and Green Waste.

They provided only Recycle and Green Waste cans.
Tried contacting them but the system is broken. Where should I put my Trash.

What in name did we allow removal of Athens waste company to be replaced with the mist incompetent trash company known as UNITED WASTE COMPANY. WHO, allowed this at the town hall counsel, for a 2 cents difference. Are you out of your mind. They are real idiots. Get Athens back ASAP!!

Some written information about why the change was made (other than the 2 cent differential) would be appreciated. I would also like to know if there are any differences between Athens and UWS’s services, e.g., number of allowed bulky item pick-ups, requirements for completely closed lids, trash pick-up days, holiday schedule modifications….

        Thank you

.02 cents is not a good reason to change out our coverage, have to change containers. I don’t want to deal with a virtual meeting. You had better be mailing all the info asap.
