At the October 28, 2024, Alhambra City Council meeting, members enthusiastically expressed their support and appreciation for Lewis McCammon’s tireless volunteer community work. Through his public comments at every council meeting and for almost all agenda items, Mr. McCammon brings additional perspective to the City’s work.
Mayor Pérez congratulated and commended Mr. McCammon for his lifetime of contributions to the community, “Mr. McCammon has dedicated his life to making a positive difference in his community, such as by lowering the voting age from 21 to 18 in 1968, participating in landmark legal cases that reformed candidate filing fees and contributions, and supporting marginalized communities through organizations like the United Farm Workers. As a math, history, and physics teacher, he dedicated over three decades to improving student outcomes in Los Angeles Schools, establishing scholarship programs for underrepresented students, and advocating for teacher rights.”
Mr. McCammon is a proud lifelong resident of Alhambra. He contributes significantly to discussions on land use, zoning, and affordable housing and is also a member of the City’s HCDA Citizen Advisory Committee.
Community members who rely on Mr. McCammon’s policy analysis attended the ceremony to celebrate him. Mr. McCammon, as self-effacing as ever, took time to highlight his wife, Eliza’s, achievements over his own. “For Alhambrans’, Lew is a city treasure we love and appreciate. If you can keep up with his night owl schedule, he is an excellent resource for helping us understand the complexities of city policy. Thanks, Lew!” said community leader, Marisol Grier.
