Today, Thursday Oct. 5th, 2017, Gov. Jerry Brown signed a legislation presented by Assemblyman David Chiu’s, aimed at protecting immigrants from intimidation and retaliation in their homes by their landlords.

AB 291, otherwise known as ‘The Immigrant Tenant Protection Act’, bolsters state law prohibiting California landlords from harassing and threatening undocumented immigrant tenants with disclosure of their immigration status or reporting them to immigration authorities.
Governor Brown said:
This action protects public safety and ensures hard-working people who contribute to our state are respected.
Today’s state bill signing comes after a series of actions by Gov. Brown’s administration in support of the immigrant community.
AB 291 prohibits landlords and property owners from increasing rent in addition to protecting tenants from being evicted due to their immigration status
