View Rembrandt’s self-portrait and wish him a happy birthday at the Norton Simon Museum this weekend.

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (simply known as Rembrandt) was born July 15, 1606.
In Rembrandt’s Self-Portrait (c. 1636–38) he “portrays himself as an artist of status and accomplishment by virtue of his velvet beret, his rich gown and the gold chain around his neck. A rich layering of oil paint and glazing lends a luminous aspect to his face and offers a fascinating comparison with the broader handling of his body which retains the impression of a rapidly drawn sketch.” According to the museum’s description.
In 1977, Mr. Simon acquired one of the finest Rembrandt print collections in private hands—118 etchings owned by Charles C. Cunningham, who made the work of this great artist his focus during the early 1960s and 1970s.
An added perk to a visit to the Norton Simon Museum, 411 W. Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, is beating the heat by staying cool browsing the galleries of the museum.
Hours on the weekend are as follows:
- Saturday: 12:00 – 7:00 pm.
- Sunday: 12:00 – 5:00 pm.
The final entry time for non-members or visitors without tickets is 45 minutes before the Museum closes.
