GUEST OPINION

The wealth of the richest 1% in America has now reached a staggering $52 trillion, a record high. That’s not just a number; it’s a flashing warning sign of how deeply skewed our economic system has become. While this elite group quietly enjoys historic gains, working families are literally being asked to foot the bill.

The political theater surrounding government shutdowns and fiscal cliffs often obscures what’s really happening: tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy, paid for by slashing public services that millions rely on, including healthcare. This isn’t theory or exaggeration. It’s the documented outcome of policies repeatedly championed by Republican leadership, including convicted felon Donald Trump, whose tax cuts overwhelmingly benefit the rich and powerful corporations.
Every deflection, every shutdown “blame game,” and every overhyped budget crisis serves as a distraction from this reality. While you worry whether your healthcare will survive the next round of cuts, billionaires are walking away with more tax breaks.
This isn’t about envy. It’s about fairness. When the top 1% hold more wealth than the bottom 90% combined, and still receive handouts from lawmakers, we must ask: Who is the government really working for?
Don’t get distracted by the noise. Follow the money. Follow the facts.
