In response to the nationwide call for a general strike on Friday, January 30, organized to protest recent actions by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Vroman’s Bookstore has released a message to its community clarifying its plans for the day.

While activists across the country are encouraging people to refrain from work, school, and shopping as part of the “National Shutdown” and general strike efforts, Vroman’s leadership emphasized that the bookstore will remain open to serve as a welcoming and supportive space for all. Organizers of the strike have cited ongoing protests sparked by recent fatal shootings involving federal agents and have pushed for broad participation in demonstrations and economic actions.
In a letter to its supporters, Vroman’s described itself as a long‑standing community gathering place and affirmed its commitment to being there for people regardless of what they decide to do on Friday. Rather than closing its doors, the bookstore will host a safe, open environment where people can come to read, rest, and connect. To support visitors, Vroman’s will offer:
- Free advanced reader books while supplies last
- Activities for children
- Refreshments for everyone, with no expectation to spend money
- Story time and crafts at 11:00 am
The bookstore’s message stresses inclusivity and community support, aiming to provide a refuge during a day of heightened political activism and public engagement.
