Police Arrest Sex Offender and Suspects in Stolen Vehicle.

March 30: Police Apprehend Wanted Felon
On Saturday, March 30, 2024, at 7:59 pm, South Pasadena police officers were dispatched to the 1900 block of Huntington Lane for a report of a suspect looking into carport cabinets and attempting to open car doors.
Officers arrived on the scene and swiftly located Robert Owen Smith, a 56-year-old unhoused individual, still present at the location. Upon seeing the officers, Smith attempted to flee, but was apprehended shortly thereafter. Subsequent investigations revealed that Smith was a sex offender who had failed to maintain compliance with registration requirements, and was wanted for an outstanding felony warrant.
Smith was arrested, booked, and held at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Inmate Reception Center pending further court proceedings.

April 1: Police Apprehend Suspects in Stolen Vehicle
On Monday, April 1, 2024, at 4:24 pm, officers were alerted to a Flock camera notification for a stolen vehicle.
Officers located the vehicle, a black 2020 Chevrolet Camaro, reported stolen from the City of Montebello, and attempted to stop the car at Fremont Avenue and Columbia Street. The driver, Angel Rodriguez (19) of Los Angeles drove onto the 110 Freeway. He exited the freeway at Avenue 43 and the officers lost sight of the vehicle, terminating the pursuit.
During their return to South Pasadena, officers encountered the same Chevrolet Camaro in a collision at Figueroa Street and Marmion Way in Los Angeles. Following the collision, several bystanders chased after Rodriguez and his passenger, 26-year-old Walter Ayalarecarte of Whittier, who fled the scene on foot. South Pasadena officers located and arrested both Rodriguez and Ayalarecarte a short distance away. Subsequently, they were booked and held at the Alhambra City Jail pending arraignment.
The occupants of the other vehicle involved in the collision sustained minor abrasions and received on-site medical treatment from Los Angeles City Fire Department paramedics. The investigation of the collision is being handled by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Traffic Unit.

April 3: Update on Assault with A Deadly Weapon Investigation
On Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at 11:49 am, detectives from the South Pasadena Police Department arrested a second suspect in the shooting incident at Garfield Park.
The juvenile suspect was arrested without incident at his home in Los Angeles. He was subsequently booked for Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Minor in Possession of a Firearm, Conspiracy, and Carrying a Firearm in Public. Based on current California State law, after booking he was released to the custody of his mother and is due to appear in East Los Angeles Court on June 5, 2024.
