Cosmology seeks to explain the origins of our universe. Like an archaeologist uncovering artifacts from the distant past, observational cosmologists search for signals from space—relics of our universe’s ancient history. They focus on light from distant objects that was emitted millions or even billions of years ago.
In this lecture, Dr. Ruby Byrne will explore how these observations shape our current understanding of the universe’s origins. She will also discuss how modern radio telescopes, like the OVRO-LWA, continue this legacy, helping fill in gaps in our cosmic history.
The lecture will run from 8:00 to 8:45 pm, followed by a Q&A panel and guided stargazing until 9:45 pm. Stargazing is weather-dependent, but the lecture and Q&A will take place regardless of weather conditions. The event is in-person, with both the lecture and Q&A panel also live-streamed on YouTube.
About the Series
Stargazing Lectures are free, public-level talks followed by a Q&A panel and guided stargazing with telescopes (weather permitting). All events are held at the Cahill Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics at Caltech and are open to all, with no reservations required. Lectures are 30 minutes, followed by 60 minutes of stargazing and a panel Q&A. Feel free to stay for as long as you wish.
Stargazing is only possible with clear skies, but the lecture and panel Q&A will proceed regardless of weather.
