Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger has released an open letter addressing survivors of the Eaton Fire and the broader Altadena community, highlighting recent wildfire recovery legislation signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom.
By News Desk
The letter applauds the signing of Assembly Bill 468 and Senate Bill 571, which increase penalties for crimes such as looting in disaster zones. Barger cited the impact of such crimes following the Eaton Fire and emphasized the importance of strengthening protections for affected communities.
She also noted the signing of Senate Bill 782, which creates new financing tools for local governments to support infrastructure rebuilding. According to Barger, the bill will allow for investments in damaged public facilities without requiring new or increased taxes.
In addition, Barger addressed Governor Newsom’s veto of Senate Bill 629, a measure that would have revised criteria for identifying fire hazard zones. She acknowledged concerns from Altadena residents and expressed support for a data-driven approach to wildfire resilience that does not impose additional burdens on those rebuilding.
