One year after the Eaton Fire claimed lives and devastated the Altadena community, a state‑led investigation is now underway to determine what went wrong the night of the disaster and to ensure accountability across all levels of government.

The review, ordered in June 2025 by Assemblymember John Harabedian (D‑Pasadena) in his role as Chair of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee, officially began last week under the direction of the State Auditor.
Harabedian said the anniversary underscores both the community’s resilience and the need for answers. “One year later, we remember the lives lost and the devastation caused by the Eaton Fire,” he said. “Altadena’s spirit remains unbroken, families are returning home, neighbors are continuing to help neighbors, and this community is finding its strength again. But survivors and loved ones still do not have answers about everything that went wrong that night. This audit is a tool for justice.”
The investigation will evaluate preparedness and emergency response across all agencies involved before, during, and after the fire. Its purpose is to clarify what happened, identify systemic failures, and help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
“Recovery cannot rely solely on the courage of survivors,” Harabedian added. “Every family affected deserves answers, accountability, and a government that acts with transparency and integrity.”
He emphasized that honoring those who died requires learning from the disaster and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable. State officials say additional information on the audit’s scope and progress will be released as it becomes available.
