The U.S. has decided to stand on the right side, the side of love!
The Supreme Court, in a historic ruling that for months has been the focus of speculation, ruled today that states cannot keep same-sex couples from marrying and must recognize their unions. The decision was 5-4.
By Robin Southworth
Justice Anthony Kennedy closed his opinion with the following passages that sum up how we feel.
No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were.
As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.
The judgment of the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit is reversed.
It is so ordered.
Prior to today’s ruling, same-sex marriage had already been made legal in 37 states and the District of Columbia.
Still not clear what happens now with the pastor that promised to set himself on fire if same-sex marriage was legalized nationwide, and whether he does some serious back-peddling.
And for those who are moving to Canada because they’re fed up with this country, go ahead: Canada nationalized same-sex marriage back in June 29, 2005.
