Students from the SPMS and SPHS Drama programs recently had the opportunity to attend the fast-paced, comedic farce One Man, Two Guvnors at A Noise Within Theatre in Pasadena. This event marked a significant milestone for the drama programs, as it brought together students from 7th to 12th grade in a fun and engaging way.

The gathering aimed to strengthen the connection between the two growing drama programs, providing a chance for students who had worked together over the years to reconnect outside the classroom. The outing also gave students the opportunity to learn from live theater while deepening their appreciation for the craft.
Before heading to the theater, students participated in an interactive learning session focused on commedia dell’arte, the influential theatrical tradition that shaped modern dramatic conventions. They studied the 11 main stock characters used in commedia, learning how each is constructed and how they interact with one another. The students then took part in a series of acting and improvisation exercises designed to stretch their skills and enhance their character-building techniques.
Seeing a live performance after analyzing the playwright’s use of stock characters helped deepen the students’ understanding of professional theater and the mechanics behind stage productions. This hands-on learning experience proved invaluable in advancing their theatrical education.
The District extended thanks to SPMS drama teacher Schuyler Mastain and SPHS drama teacher Nick Hoffa for their dedication in organizing this unique experience, allowing students to gain insights from both the stage and the classroom.
