Nearly 200 ninth-grade students from South Pasadena High School (SPHS) took part in an immersive educational field trip last week to deepen their understanding of Japanese American history, as part of their study of George Takei’s graphic novel-memoir They Called Us Enemy.

The students visited the Go for Broke National Education Center and Monument, as well as Little Tokyo Plaza in downtown Los Angeles. The trip served to complement the recent addition of Takei’s memoir to the ninth-grade English Language Arts curriculum.
The experience aimed to bring to life the stories of the Nisei—second-generation Japanese American veterans—highlighting their sacrifices and contributions during World War II. Tour guides at the center shared powerful narratives about the Nisei’s struggle for justice and their efforts to build a future free from racial intolerance.
SPHS English teachers were thanked for guiding students through the text and organizing the meaningful outing, which gave students a deeper appreciation of a pivotal chapter in American history.
